Celebrating Survivorship and Connection at NYPC’s First Patient Alumni Network Gathering
A First-Ever Celebration
In honor of Cancer Survivors Month, the New York Proton Center (NYPC) welcomed former patients to the first-ever in-person gathering of the NYPC Patient Alumni Network.
The special event brought together members of our growing community of NYPC “graduates” for an afternoon filled with connection, reflection, laughter, and inspiration. For many attendees, it was a chance to return to NYPC not as patients, but as survivors—reconnecting with familiar faces, sharing updates on life after treatment, and celebrating the milestones they’ve achieved along the way.
Stories of Resilience and Connection
The Patient Alumni Network was created to foster meaningful connections among former patients while providing opportunities to support others who are navigating their own proton therapy journeys. Throughout the afternoon, attendees shared stories of resilience, hope, and healing, offering encouragement and insights drawn from their own experiences. The conversations served as a powerful reminder that while treatment may end, the bonds formed through a shared cancer journey can last for years.
Ways to Get Involved
Guests also learned about ways they can stay involved with NYPC and make a difference for future patients—from volunteering at the Center and in the community to serving as peer mentors for patients beginning proton therapy. By sharing their experiences and offering support, alumni can provide comfort, guidance, and reassurance to individuals facing many of the same challenges they once encountered themselves. For new patients, there is nothing quite as meaningful as hearing from someone who has been in their shoes and come out the other side.
Building a Community Beyond Treatment
“We are grateful to everyone who joined us for this memorable afternoon,” said NYPC CEO Christopher Panczner. “Our patients are at the heart of everything we do. The Patient Alumni Network provides a wonderful opportunity for former patients to stay connected, support one another, and help others benefit from the knowledge and perspective that comes from lived experience.”
Cancer Survivors Month is a time to celebrate the strength, perseverance, and accomplishments of cancer survivors while recognizing the importance of community and ongoing support. The stories shared during the event demonstrated the extraordinary impact survivors can have on one another and reinforced the power of paying it forward.
As the NYPC Patient Alumni Network continues to grow, we look forward to creating even more opportunities for members to reconnect, volunteer, and raise awareness about proton therapy. Together, our alumni are building a community that extends far beyond treatment—one defined by compassion, encouragement, friendship, and a shared commitment to helping others navigate their own cancer journeys. We can’t wait to see where the Patient Alumni Network goes next.
